Whitworth gallery Workshop

09/03/16
We had workshops with 2 contemporary artists where we looked at the works of Nico Vascellari and Ben Rivers. I found that Nico Cascellari's work was very inspiring because I loved the use of light and shadow, it briefly linked to a recent project I did so seeing this was very exciting.

Looking at Ben Rivers' piece, I was very confused about the whole concept but read the booklet to understand it a little more.

After this we did short activities where we could either do stop-motion animation or write a few lines of a poem.

Workshop with Paul Granjon

17/03/2016

"I am interested in the co-evolution of humans and machines, and solutions for alternative futures.
I build robots and other machines for shows in performances, art galleries and festivals.
I also create temporary factories and other events where people can join in making, thinking, and playing." - Paul Granjon

Today we did a workshop at the gallery with international artist, Paul Granjon. He has a exhibition at the gallery at the moment called 'Am I Robot'. "Am I Robot is based on a mobile robot called Combover Jo, that roams a large room on the first floor of the gallery, mingling with the public. It talks in a machinic voice, sometimes to itself, sometimes engaging with visitors. On the second floor the visitors can enter a small room that complements the robot…" From the room in the second floor you can operate the robot and speak through a microphone.

For the workshop we could dismantle old, out of date technology like old DVD boxes, printers etc... I, along with 2 peers went and spoke to the public and asked them to form a sentence that started with the word "Robots...". We had things from "Robots are the future" to "Robots are evil". Then we typed them up on the computer but also wrote the opposite to each sentence too, so if the sentence was "Robots are awesome" the negative would be "Robots are not awesome". This could then get played through the laptop in a mechanical voice which mixes up the sentences and repeats them.

After that I was dismantling old pieces of technology to see if there was anything that could make sound, movement or light.
From routing around in a box I came across this piece from a projector. When you look inside it would be bright pink, orange, red, blue, purple and green colours. If you look straight forward, the sides reflect of it and you can see what is next to you instead of what's in front of you. Then I used the camera and took videos through it, from what was going on through the room to the materials up close.

Edinburgh

1/03/16-4/03/16
From the trip to Edinburgh there were some very beautiful and inspiration things to see everywhere we went. The architecture was amazing with its fine intricacy, it was just as amazing inside too. There is definitely some shapes and colour schemes I could take from this. One gallery we visited was the Modern Art Gallery, there were a few pieces that really stood out to me there, such as Paoloozi's studio because I love how so much creativeness is happening and there's always something new to find everytime you look. I also liked the Vulcan sculpture due to how the metal they used reacts with the light, it was great seeing it up close.

We also visited The National Museum of Scotland, my favourite parts of the museum were the 'Life Begins' room because I really liked the earthy tones but then the contrasting of bright tones from other pieces and just the whole universe close up and dissected.

My favourite gallery we visited was the Dovecote gallery, because it was textile based, showing accessories I'd looked at in my previous project, it was amazing to now see them in real life and up close. I was very intrigued that we could watch them working on the looms. The whole place and atmosphere was very inspirational and a great experience.

This visit to Edinburgh has inspired me in so many different ways, I will now decide which direction I will take for the FMP.

Project Proposal

Project Proposal

From past projects I have built skills in time management and organisation which will enable me to reach the final deadline. Through the process of this brief I will develop my knowledge in my specialist subject areas. From doing this course I am now well aware that my strengths are in textiles and fashion. I would like this project to be textile based because it gives me more freedom when experimenting. I will most likely work with 3D as I am most comfortable and experienced in 3D rather than 2D along with the final piece being a mixed media piece.

I will be looking at the relationship between masculinity and femininity. To do this I will use materials that will echo these differences and similarities. Experiment and research the shapes, forms, colours, objects and patterns that often get associated with males and females. There is a very complicated relationship between manhood and womanhood; I will present this in an abstract way rather than figurative. To depict and question stereotypes, I will manipulate a variety of materials to link to emotions. I am going to research and experiment to find the properties and characteristics of the materials, then explore these further. My aim is to celebrate this relationship of masculine and feminine qualities and to investigate the negative and positive aspects.

I am looking at forming a visual dialogue, a constructed piece that shows the strengths and weaknesses interlocking with different layering and the structure echoing turbulence and harmony. Juxtaposing and counter balancing are going to be represented through the use of materials to depict the relationship between the two genders. This will lead to culture and symbolism and how men and woman are treated differently in these circumstances.

The questionnaire I am going to produce is part of my primary research to get different viewpoints on masculine and feminine from different ages and genders. I would like texture and colour to be a very big part of this project investigating stereotypes. I have gained primary research from the Edinburgh trip, workshops and exhibitions we have visited for past projects, like the textile exhibition at the Whitworth gallery. I have chosen a theme which has the ability to unfold through the research and samples I do, allowing me to constantly have inspiration; taking my work on a journey.

I would like to form art which records how people see the relationship between masculinity and femininity from my time by doing the questionnaire, yet including how it was seen in the past in order to record the change and progression.

For my secondary research I will look at artists who use structure, textile artists and feminist artists in order to see how they find their inspiration and their own beliefs to produce their work like Sarah Lucas, because she uses materials that are considered manlier like cigarettes. Another feminist artist I will look at is Judy Chicago as she created ‘The Dinner Party’ (1974-1979); this is one of the most well-known pieces of feminist art and caused lots of up-roar and controversy. A textile artist I have looked at called Marianne Kemp who weaves with horse hair. She does unconventional weaving techniques, combining texture, colour and movement. Furthermore I will also use the college library to use the books.

I will do daily action plans which will help me reflect on what needs to be taken on board and help me drive my ideas forward. I will also get peer and tutor feedback in order to progress which I will take on board and document in my journal.

I want to echo masculinity and femininity through the materials I choose to use and embrace the differences between men and woman as well as celebrating it.

A possibility for experimentation will be showing something falling apart like a knitted jumper or even turning the loose part into a solid material like wire.

Self Assessment & Peer Assessment

16/03/2016

Strengths:
- Well organised
- Work always ready for deadlines
- Commited
- Hard Working
- Lots of experimenting
- Well planned
- Confident with manipulating materials
- Textiles
- Fashion

Weaknesses:
- Do more drawing work (observational)
- Improve written work
- Be confident with my ideas
- Self doubt

Opportunities:
- Fashion Organisation
- Gallery
- Competitions
- Workshops

Threats:
- Money for printing
- Computers

Reflection: From self refelecting and getting feedback from peers I will continue working to my strengths and choose either fashion or textiles or both for the FMP. From my weaknesses I agree that I could do more drawing, mainly observational and will work on this on the side of this project; doing this would help me in order to include them into my portfolio for university interviews. I will work on my written work and try not to be too literal as well as not over complicating things as that's what I tend to do. Self doubting and not being confident with my ideas can turn into a threat because it could jepodise my future; in the art industry people make their voices be heard and I need to stop shying away from that and not just show things through my work but be able to verbally express them confidently or my work or I wouldn't be taken seriously.  The opportunities are very broad and include workshops, working with many different artists. This is very beneficial as I could incorporate a part I enjoyed or was good at into the project. A threat is mainly the financial side of things as paying for printing and most of the materials could be a disadvantage.
